The Best Lightweight Duffel Bag

A duffel's weight only means something next to its capacity. Divide one by the other across every duffel here and the order changes - including one bag with wheels that outperforms a bag without them.

The Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 — a published 1.4 lb for 45 L, which is 0.031 lb per liter, the lightest figure in this ledger. The result nobody expects is second place: the Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler Wheeled 110 carries 108 L at 0.039 lb per liter — with wheels — and beats both 40 L soft duffels here.

A canvas duffel bag standing upright

Why weight per liter and not weight

“Lightweight duffel” is a claim about a bag on its own, and no duffel is ever on its own — it is always holding something. A 1.4 lb bag that holds 45 L and a 1.4 lb bag that holds 25 L are not the same product, and only one of them is efficient.

So the measure here is published empty weight divided by published capacity, in pounds per liter. It is the same arithmetic this site runs on travel packs, and it is the only comparison that survives bags of different sizes. The method.

Every duffel, divided

Manufacturer-published weights and capacities, compiled 3 September 2026. Weight per liter is published weight divided by published capacity.
DuffelPublished weightPublished capacityPer liter
Osprey Daylite Duffel 451.4 lb45 L0.031 lb
Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler Wheeled 1104.25 lb108 L0.039 lb
Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 401.81 lb40 L0.045 lb
Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 402.06 lb40 L0.052 lb
Patagonia Black Hole Wheeled 709.04 lb70 L0.129 lb

The spread across the five is 4.2×. That is a bigger range than the same measure produces on wheeled suitcases, and it is the reason a duffel bought on the word “lightweight” can easily be the heaviest thing on the shelf.

The wheeled bag that is not heavy

Wheels, a frame and a telescoping handle are dead weight, and the usual assumption is that they disqualify a bag from any lightweight comparison. The Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler Wheeled 110 publishes 4.25 lb for 108 L, which is 0.039 lb per liter — better than either 40 L soft duffel here.

The reason is scale rather than magic. A wheel assembly costs roughly the same number of pounds whether the bag holds 40 L or 110 L, so spreading it across more liters makes the per-liter figure fall. It also means the opposite is true: a small wheeled bag is the worst possible shape on this measure. The rolling duffels, compared.

What the arithmetic does not capture: 108 L packed full will be well over most airlines’ 50 lb checked allowance long before the bag is full. Capacity that large is a volume tool, not a weight allowance. What overweight actually costs.

Two of them fit a carry-on box

Lightness is most useful where it is also compliant. On published dimensions:

  • Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 — 21 × 14 × 9 in. Clears the strict 22 × 14 × 9 in box that seven US carriers publish, and carries the most liters of any bag in this ledger that does.
  • Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40 — 22 × 12.5 × 9 in. Clears it with 1.5 in of width to spare, which is the only real margin in the ledger.
  • Patagonia Black Hole 40 — 21 × 13.7 × 10.6 in. 10.6 in of depth fails the 9 in limit everywhere except Sun Country.

Everything measured against the strict box.

What you give up for the lightest figure

The Daylite Duffel publishes recycled polyester. The Patagonia publishes recycled polyester ripstop with a TPU-film laminate, and the Eagle Creek publishes 600D TPU-coated polyester with 1680D ballistic base panels. Those are heavier constructions and they are heavier for a reason.

Which means the ranking above is a ranking on one axis, honestly labeled. If your duffel spends its life in the back of a car, take the lightest. If it goes in a hold, on a roof rack or into a boat, the extra 0.021 lb per liter the Patagonia costs is buying a laminate. The weather-resistance comparison.

The picks

  • Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 — the lightest per liter. 1.4 lb, 45 L, $95, fits the strict carry-on box, converts to a backpack, and at $4.75 per covered year it is the cheapest warranty-year on any bag here. Its con: plain recycled polyester, and 14 in of width with no margin.
  • Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler Wheeled 110 — lightest with wheels. 4.25 lb for 108 L, under a warranty published as covering the life of the gear. Its con: 108 L will exceed a 50 lb checked allowance long before it is full.
  • Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40 — the carry-on answer. 1.81 lb, 40 L, ballistic base panels, and the only bag in this ledger with genuine width margin against a sizer. Its con: a shoulder strap, not a harness.
  • Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40 — the weatherproof one. TPU-film laminate and the Ironclad Guarantee at 2.06 lb. Its con: 10.6 in deep, which fails almost every carry-on limit.

Every pick, with the working

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • $4.75 per covered year, the lowest of any bag here
  • 45 L published inside a 21 × 14 × 9 in box — more capacity than any carry-on case here
  • 1.4 lb, and it converts to a backpack

What you give up

  • 14 in width is exactly at the limit, with no margin for a full bag
  • No internal structure, so what you pack decides the shape a sizer sees
  • Duffel carry gets old fast at 45 L of contents
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 9.5/10 $95 ÷ 20 yr = $4.75/yr; $95 ÷ 45 L = $2.11/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY

Warranty No Matter What limited warranty — published as covering the life of the gear

Fits No US carrier in our table publishes a limit these dimensions satisfy. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 0.039 lb per liter published — roughly a quarter of the figure for a wheeled duffel of half the size
  • 1680D ballistic polyester panels where the bag drags
  • No Matter What warranty, published as covering the life of the gear, with a repair route

What you give up

  • 30 × 14 × 15 in is 59 linear inches — inside the 62 in checked rule, and nowhere near a carry-on
  • A soft-sided bag gives no structural protection to anything fragile
  • Eagle Creek does not publish whether the warranty covers airline handling damage
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 8.4/10 $239 ÷ 20 yr = $11.95/yr; $239 ÷ 108 L = $2.21/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 0.0/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 0 of 11 US carriers

  • 1 lb 13 oz for 40 L, and it packs into its own end pocket
  • $7.45 per covered year under a limited lifetime warranty

What you give up

  • No wheels and no back panel structure — the straps are a shoulder strap, not a harness
  • Ballistic panels are on the base only; the body is 600D
  • A soft-sided 40 L bag only holds its published shape when it is not overpacked
The arithmetic behind the score

What it does well

  • 0.05 lb per liter is the best carry efficiency figure on the whole site
  • Ironclad Guarantee lists refund alongside repair and replacement
  • Removable padded backpack straps as published, not an accessory

What you give up

  • 10.6 in depth fails the 9 in standard at six US carriers
  • $7.95 per covered year is good, but $159 is real money for a duffel
  • A soft duffel packed full loses whatever shape let it pass a sizer
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 7.8/10 $159 ÷ 20 yr = $7.95/yr; $159 ÷ 40 L = $3.98/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 0.9/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 1 of 11 US carriers: SY

5 · Wet, rough trips where the fabric matters more than the allowance

Patagonia Black Hole Wheeled Duffel 70L

4.6

Skip this one. The one duffel here that fails its own category. Patagonia publishes it at 9.04 lb for 70 L — 0.129 lb per liter, which is more than three times the Eagle Creek wheeled duffel at 0.039 lb, and worse per liter than the Travelpro Maxlite 5, an actual wheeled hardside suitcase, at 0.117 lb. It is a well-made bag under the Ironclad Guarantee and there is no version of the lightweight argument it wins. If you want wheels on a duffel, the Eagle Creek carries 54% more capacity for less than half the weight.

The most weather-resistant shell of any duffel in this ledger, and at a published 9 lb 0.6 oz for 70 liters it is more than twice the weight per liter of the Eagle Creek.

What it does well

  • 900-denier recycled polyester ripstop with a TPU-film laminate — the toughest duffel fabric here
  • Ironclad Guarantee, published as repair, replace or refund
  • 27 × 13 × 14.5 in is 54.5 linear inches, comfortably inside the 62 in checked rule

What you give up

  • 9 lb 0.6 oz published — 4.79 lb heavier than the 108 L Eagle Creek, for 38 fewer liters
  • 0.129 lb per liter, more than three times the Eagle Creek's figure
  • No published US price was readable, so cost per covered year cannot be computed

Common questions

What is the lightest travel duffel bag?
Per liter of published capacity, the Osprey Daylite Duffel 45: 1.4 lb for 45 L, which is 0.031 lb per liter. In absolute terms it is also the lightest bag in our ledger that still clears a 22 x 14 x 9 in carry-on box.
Do wheels make a duffel too heavy?
Not necessarily. The Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler Wheeled 110 publishes 4.25 lb for 108 L - 0.039 lb per liter, better than either 40 L soft duffel here. A wheel assembly costs a fixed number of pounds, so it hurts small bags far more than large ones.
Which lightweight duffel fits as a carry-on?
The Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 at a published 21 x 14 x 9 in and the Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40 at 22 x 12.5 x 9 in. The Patagonia Black Hole 40 is 10.6 in deep and fails the 9 in limit at every US carrier except Sun Country.
Is a lighter duffel less durable?
Often, and the makers publish why. The lightest bag here is plain recycled polyester; the heavier ones publish TPU film laminates and 1680D ballistic base panels. Weight per liter ranks efficiency, not toughness.
How much should a 40L duffel weigh?
The two 40 L duffels we compile publish 1.81 lb and 2.06 lb, so roughly 2 lb is the going figure. Anything much over that is paying weight for fabric or for wheels, and both are legitimate - just check which one you are buying.
