Duffel vs Travel Backpack

Same 40 liters, 81 percent apart on published weight. The arithmetic favors the duffel so heavily that the interesting question is what the arithmetic cannot see.

By Sawyer V.Last updated

We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.

At the same 40 liters, the duffel weighs 1.46 lb less — Eagle Creek publishes 1.81 lb against the Osprey Farpoint 40’s 3.27 lb, which is 81% heavier for the identical capacity. Across every bag on this page, duffels average 0.043 lb per liter and packs 0.084 lb — almost exactly double. Buy the pack anyway if you will carry it more than a terminal at a time: the weight it adds is the harness, and a harness is the only thing on this page that makes a loaded bag feel lighter than it is.

Every figure is the manufacturer’s own published specification. Weight per liter, cost per liter, cost per covered year, packed volume and carrier fit are computed from those published numbers and from each carrier’s published carry-on limit, checked 3 September 2026. Prices on the buy buttons are live.

The weight gap, at identical capacity

Most format comparisons fail because they compare a 40 L bag against a 55 L one and call the difference a format difference. This ledger holds three duffels and three packs that publish capacities close enough to compare directly, and two of them publish the same number.

Manufacturer-published capacity and weight. Weight per liter is published weight divided by published capacity.

The same arithmetic run against a wheeled case puts the gap at four pounds rather than one and a half — duffel against suitcase covers that, and pack against rolling carry-on covers the third side of the triangle. A travel pack sits between the two: lighter than a case, heavier than a duffel, and the only one of the three you can run for a gate with.

Where the ranking stops following the format

Read the picks table at the top of this page in order and the formats interleave: duffel, duffel, pack, pack, duffel, pack. If weight were the whole story the three duffels would hold the top three rows, and they do not.

What splits them is published fit, and it does not favor duffels at all. Run every bag’s published dimensions against the published carry-on box at all eleven US carriers we track, on all three sides, the way a gate sizer works:

Published external dimensions against each carrier's published carry-on limit, checked on all three sides. Carrier limits compiled 3 September 2026. Packed volume is the product of the three published dimensions; the standard 22 x 14 x 9 in box is 2,772 cubic inches.

The Farpoint result is the one that catches people out. It is the strongest single pack in this ledger on almost every other axis, and its published depth of 9.1 in — one tenth of an inch over — drops it from eleven carriers to four. Its sibling clears all eleven on the same capacity. That is the entire difference between the two Ospreys.

What the extra pound and a half actually buys

A duffel is lighter because it is less bag. Nothing has been engineered away; the parts simply are not there. What a travel pack publishes that a duffel does not, and what that mass is doing:

  • A harness that transfers load to your hips. This is the whole argument. A shoulder strap hangs a bag off one joint; a hip belt puts most of the load on your skeleton. Nothing about a duffel’s published weight tells you how it feels at minute twenty.
  • A frame sheet or back panel. It keeps the load off your spine and stops a badly packed bag from folding around you. It is also several ounces of foam and plastic that a duffel does not carry.
  • A padded laptop compartment. Travel packs publish one; the duffels here do not. If a laptop travels with you, a duffel means a sleeve, which is weight you add back.
  • Structure when half empty. A pack holds a shape. A partly packed duffel is a bag of loose objects, which is why the same volume carries worse.

The practical test is distance and frequency. A bag carried from a car to a check-in desk and from a carousel to a taxi is carried for perhaps four minutes a day, and four minutes does not need a hip belt. A bag carried through a connection, across a city, up to a third-floor apartment and onto a train is a different object, and a harness that fits stops mattering only when you put the bag down.

Cost per covered year, where the duffel wins again

The site’s value arithmetic divides a published price by the published warranty term and by published capacity. Neither figure flatters the packs:

Manufacturer-published list prices, compiled 3 September 2026 — not current street prices, which are on the buy buttons above. Warranties with no stated end date are divided by this site's published 20-year horizon, which is a convention and not a durability claim.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35$190No published termCannot be computed$5.43/L

The cheapest cost per covered year of any bag in this ledger is a duffel. The Osprey Daylite Duffel publishes 45 L — five liters more than either travel pack here — for $95, 1.4 lb and a warranty with no stated end date. Against the Fairview it is 2.04 lb lighter, 5 L larger and less than half the price.

One warranty detail deserves naming because it is rare: Osprey publishes that its guarantee covers damage caused by an airline, which almost no luggage warranty does. Of the whole product ledger, only eight rows publish that cover and five of them are Osprey. Eagle Creek and Patagonia publish lifetime guarantees and say nothing either way about handling damage.

Organization, and the thing duffels are actually bad at

A duffel is one compartment. That is its virtue when you are throwing gear in and its failure when you need a specific shirt at 6 a.m. in a dark room. A travel pack publishes a clamshell opening that lies flat like a suitcase, internal dividers and a separate laptop sleeve.

The gap is closeable and the fix costs weight. Packing cubes turn a duffel into drawers for a published few ounces, which still leaves the duffel comfortably ahead on total carried weight — cubes do not weigh a pound and a half. What they cannot add is a laptop compartment or a hip belt.

Which to buy

  • Buy the duffel if the bag goes car → check-in → carousel → taxi, if you want maximum volume inside a sizer for the least money, or if it is a second bag that packs flat when it is not in use. Start with the Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 at a published 1.4 lb; take the Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40 instead if the bag will be thrown around, for its published ballistic panels.
  • Buy the travel pack if you will carry the bag for more than a few minutes at a time, if a laptop travels with you, or if you are doing one-bag travel where the bag is with you all day. Take the Fairview 40 if you fly carriers that measure — it is the only bag here that publishes the standard box exactly — and the Farpoint 40 if its harness suits you better and you fly carriers with a deeper box.
  • Buy neither if what you want is to not carry anything at all. A wheeled case weighs about four pounds more than a duffel and rolls, which is a trade worth seeing costed out before you decide the pack is the compromise.

Warranty All Mighty Guarantee — any reason, any product, any era

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • $4.75 per covered year, the lowest of any bag here
  • 45 L published inside a 21 × 14 × 9 in box — more capacity than any carry-on case here
  • 1.4 lb, and it converts to a backpack

What you give up

  • 14 in width is exactly at the limit, with no margin for a full bag
  • No internal structure, so what you pack decides the shape a sizer sees
  • Duffel carry gets old fast at 45 L of contents
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 9.5/10 — $95 ÷ 20 yr = $4.75/yr; $95 ÷ 45 L = $2.11/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
  • Carry efficiency 10.0/10 — 1.4 lb ÷ 45 L = 0.031 lb/L
  • Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)

What it does well

  • 22 × 12.5 × 9 in clears the standard carry-on box on all three dimensions as published
  • 1 lb 13 oz for 40 L, and it packs into its own end pocket
  • $7.45 per covered year under a limited lifetime warranty

What you give up

  • No wheels and no back panel structure — the straps are a shoulder strap, not a harness
  • Ballistic panels are on the base only; the body is 600D
  • A soft-sided 40 L bag only holds its published shape when it is not overpacked
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 8.0/10 — $149 ÷ 20 yr = $7.45/yr; $149 ÷ 40 L = $3.73/L

What it does well

  • Published dimensions match the standard carry-on box exactly
  • Adjustable torso length rather than a fixed harness
  • Same All Mighty Guarantee as the Farpoint

What you give up

  • $200 against the Farpoint's $185 for 0.17 lb more weight
  • At exactly 22 × 14 × 9 in there is no margin for a stuffed pack
  • Laptop sleeve takes 16 in, so a larger machine travels elsewhere
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 6.8/10 — $200 ÷ 20 yr = $10/yr; $200 ÷ 40 L = $5/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY

What it does well

  • 0.08 lb per liter is the best carry efficiency figure on this site
  • The All Mighty Guarantee names no failure cause and no time limit
  • 21.7 in height clears the 22 in standard with room to spare

What you give up

  • 13.8 in width clears 14 in only when the pack is not overstuffed — soft bags grow
  • No wheels, so a long terminal is carried on your back
  • $9.25 per covered year is good but not the cheapest here
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 7.2/10 — $185 ÷ 20 yr = $9.25/yr; $185 ÷ 40 L = $4.63/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY

What it does well

  • 0.05 lb per liter is the best carry efficiency figure on the whole site
  • Ironclad Guarantee lists refund alongside repair and replacement
  • Removable padded backpack straps as published, not an accessory

What you give up

  • 10.6 in depth fails the 9 in standard at six US carriers
  • $7.95 per covered year is good, but $159 is real money for a duffel
  • A soft duffel packed full loses whatever shape let it pass a sizer
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 7.8/10 — $159 ÷ 20 yr = $7.95/yr; $159 ÷ 40 L = $3.98/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 0.9/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 1 of 11 US carriers: SY

6 · Clamshell packing when every ounce is being counted

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack

4.7

Skip this one. Skip it on a page about arithmetic, because it is the one bag here you cannot do the arithmetic on. Cotopaxi's published warranty states no term at all - repair, replace or credit, at the company's discretion - so cost per covered year cannot be computed, and the Value axis runs on half its usual inputs. That is a real cost rather than a technicality: every other bag on this page publishes a term you can divide a price by. The clamshell opening and the published 2.93 lb are genuinely good; the paperwork is not.

The lightest travel pack in this ledger and the only one whose maker publishes no warranty term at all — which is a real cost, not a technicality.

Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 2.93 lb for 35 L is 0.08 lb per liter, level with the Farpoint
  • Full clamshell opening with four mesh-fronted internal compartments
  • TPU-coated 840D shell is heavier-duty fabric than the capacity suggests

What you give up

  • Cotopaxi's published warranty states no term — the old 61-year figure is history, and lifespan is at the company's discretion
  • 10 in depth fails the 9 in standard at six US carriers
  • Without a published warranty term, cost per covered year cannot be computed at all
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 4.8/10 — $190 ÷ 35 L = $5.43/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY

Common questions

Is a duffel or a travel backpack better for carry-on travel?
On published figures the duffel wins everything that can be computed: at an identical 40 liters it weighs 1.81 lb against the Osprey Farpoint 40's 3.27 lb, which is 81 percent less bag weight for the same capacity. Buy the pack anyway if you carry the bag for more than a few minutes at a time, because the extra weight is a harness and a frame, and carry comfort is the one axis a specification sheet cannot measure.
How much heavier is a travel backpack than a duffel?
Across the six bags compared here, duffels average 0.043 lb per liter and travel packs 0.084 - almost exactly double. In absolute terms the two 40-liter bags are 1.46 lb apart, and the lightest duffel here (Osprey Daylite Duffel 45, a published 1.4 lb for 45 L) is 2.04 lb lighter than the Osprey Fairview 40 while holding five liters more.
Do duffel bags fit carry-on size limits better than backpacks?
Not according to published dimensions. The worst fit result in this comparison is a duffel - the Patagonia Black Hole 40 publishes 10.6 in of depth and clears the published carry-on box at just 1 of 11 US carriers - and the best is a backpack, the Osprey Fairview 40 at exactly 22 x 14 x 9 in, which clears all eleven. A duffel is more forgiving when half empty, but that is not a figure any maker publishes.
Can you put a laptop in a travel duffel?
Only in a sleeve you add yourself. None of the duffels compared here publishes a padded laptop compartment, while the travel packs do. That is one of the few places where the duffel's weight advantage narrows, because a protective sleeve is weight you put back into the bag.
Which is cheaper to own, a duffel or a travel backpack?
The duffel, by a wide margin on this site's cost-per-covered-year arithmetic. The Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 publishes $95 against a warranty with no stated end date, which works out at $4.75 per covered year - the cheapest figure in the entire product ledger - while the travel packs here run $9.25 and $10.00 per covered year, and one publishes no warranty term at all.
Does a packing cube fix a duffel's lack of organization?
Mostly, and cheaply. Cubes turn a single-compartment duffel into drawers for a few published ounces, which leaves the duffel well ahead of a travel pack on total carried weight. What cubes cannot add is a padded laptop compartment, a frame sheet or a hip belt, which are the other things the pack's extra weight is paying for.
