What to Pack for a Business Trip
Three nights, one carry-on, and the only trip type where you have to arrive looking like you did not travel. That constraint decides almost everything else.
We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.
For two or three nights: wear the heaviest outfit and the only pair of shoes you can, put the laptop in the personal item, and pack one more shirt than you have days. The decision that costs real weight is how the suit arrives — and the arithmetic is counterintuitive: a 40 in garment bag publishes 24 oz, while the dual-voltage travel steamer that would let you fold instead publishes 37.6 oz. The garment bag is the lighter answer.
Every weight below is the manufacturer’s published figure, converted to ounces and totaled. Nothing here has been tested by us. Prices on the buy buttons are live.
Prices last verified October 22, 2026. Prices move — the figure you see on Amazon at the moment you click is the real one.

What makes this different from any other short trip
A business trip is usually the same length as a weekend away, and this site covers the generic two-to-three night carry-on already. Three things change when the trip is for work, and all three push in the same direction:
- You have to arrive presentable. Leisure clothing tolerates being compressed into a cube. A jacket does not, and nobody is impressed by a creased one at nine in the morning.
- The laptop is not optional. On a leisure trip the personal item is spare space. On this one it is spoken for before you pack a single sock.
- The clothes are the heaviest per day you will ever pack. Dress shoes, a jacket and trousers outweigh the equivalent days of leisure clothing, and none of it compresses well.
The biggest lever is the outfit you travel in
Nothing you are wearing counts against a carry-on allowance. No carrier weighs its passengers. That makes the outbound outfit the single largest saving available on this trip, and it is free:
- Wear the shoes you cannot compress. Dress shoes are the bulkiest single packable object in the bag. One pair worn is one pair you do not pack.
- Wear or carry the jacket. A jacket over an arm or on the hook above the seat is a jacket that is not being folded at all. This is the only method on this page with a zero-ounce cost and a zero-crease result.
- Pack days minus one. You arrive in one set of clothes. A three-night trip needs three shirts, not four — the fourth is on you.
Arriving unwrinkled, costed three ways
There are exactly three published approaches, and this site holds the weights for all of them. The result is not what people assume.
| Approach | What you carry | Published weight | In ounces | Works abroad? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fold it properly | Nothing | 0 lb | 0 oz | Yes — nothing to plug in |
| Carry a garment bag | WallyBags 40 in Deluxe | 1.5 lb | 24 oz | Yes |
| Fold, then steam on arrival | Conair Power Steam GSC24 | 2.35 lb | 37.6 oz | Yes — published dual voltage |
| Fold, then steam (lightest steamer) | Steamery Cirrus Lite | 1.41 lb | 22.6 oz | Voltage rating not published |
The folding technique is its own subject and this site covers it separately in how to pack a suit in a carry-on. For which garment bag, the garment bag ranking compares them properly, and the steamer ranking covers voltage, wattage and heat-up time across the category.
Shoes are the bulk problem, not the weight problem
A second pair of dress shoes is the item most likely to push a carry-on over. They do not fold, they do not compress, and they are dirty on one side. The rule is simple: wear one pair, pack at most one more, and only if the trip genuinely needs it.
If a second pair travels, it goes in a sac rather than loose. The Eagle Creek Reveal Shoe Sac publishes 3 oz and 3 L, which is a small price for keeping a sole away from a white shirt. Our guide to packing shoes in a suitcase covers where in the case they belong and why — shoes go at the hinge end, and they get stuffed with socks rather than traveling hollow.
The personal item is spoken for
On this trip the under-seat bag is a work bag: laptop, charger, a notebook, the documents, maybe a change of shirt in case the flight is the kind of flight where you need one. That is the whole personal item, and it is why business travel is a carry-on-plus-personal-item exercise rather than a one-bag one.
- Check what your fare actually allows. A basic economy ticket that permits only a personal item is a different trip, and the fare rules page covers which carriers do that.
- Keep the laptop reachable. It comes out at most checkpoints unless the lane is a CT lane — what you still have to take out has the current position, which is less settled than people assume.
- Do not check the bag if you can avoid it. A delayed bag on a leisure trip is an inconvenience. On a business trip it is the meeting.
The list, for two or three nights
Written as what goes in the case, on the assumption that one outfit and one pair of shoes are being worn:
| Category | Two nights | Three nights | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shirts | 2 | 3 | Days minus the one you arrive in |
| Trousers | 1 | 1 | Worn; a second pair only if something formal changes |
| Jacket | 1 | 1 | Worn or carried, not packed, wherever possible |
| Shoes packed | 0 | 0–1 | The bulkiest packable object in the bag |
| Underwear and socks | 3 | 4 | One spare over the night count, always |
| Gym or casual set | 0–1 | 1 | The first thing to cut if the case is tight |
| Toiletries | 1 bag | 1 bag | Quart bag rules apply; see the liquids guide |
| Tech | Personal item | Personal item | Laptop, charger, adapter if international |
Compression cubes are worth their weight on this particular trip, for an unusual reason: they are not reducing the volume of the clothes so much as stopping shirts from moving, and movement is what creases them. The Gonex 4-piece set publishes 11.7 oz for four cubes. If you want the honest version of what compression does and does not achieve, are packing cubes worth it and do packing cubes wrinkle clothes both answer it with published figures rather than enthusiasm.
Toiletries, and the rule that has not changed
Liquids still go in containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, inside one quart-sized bag, one bag per passenger. A structured toiletry bag with a hook is worth the ounces on a trip where the bathroom is a hotel bathroom with one shelf — the BAGSMART Blast publishes 10.6 oz and hangs.
The full test, including what counts as a liquid and what to do about powders and medication, is in how to pack liquids for a flight. Nothing about a business trip changes that rule; it just makes forgetting it more expensive, because the replacement razor comes from a hotel gift shop.
If the trip crosses a border
Two things change, and only two. The plug shape, which an adapter solves — the EPICKA TA-105C publishes 5.1 oz and covers the common socket types. And the voltage, which an adapter does not solve at all.
That distinction is the one that destroys appliances. A laptop charger and a phone brick are built for 100–240 V and do not care. A single-voltage steamer, iron or hair tool plugged into a 230 V socket through an adapter meets roughly double its design voltage. Adapter against converter sets out which is which, and it is the reason the Conair’s published dual voltage matters more on this trip than its weight does.
Every pick, with the working
Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

- It carries hanging garments and almost nothing else
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 9.7/10 — $49.99 ÷ 10 yr = $5.00/yr
- Airline-fit breadth 0.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 0 of 11 US carriers

- $20 for a bag that holds one pair — two pairs means two of them
- Mesh is breathable, which also means it is not a smell barrier

- 10.6 oz published weight
- Hanging hook, which is the only thing that works in a hotel bathroom with no counter
What you give up
- No warranty term published
- 4.5 L is too small if you travel with a full skincare routine
- No separate quart bag included for the security tray
The arithmetic behind the score
