Which Osprey Travel Pack Should You Buy?
Osprey makes the pack most one-bag travelers end up with, and then makes four of them. The guarantee is identical across the line, so the decision is entirely about shape.
We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.
The guarantee is the same on all of them, so buy on shape. The Fairview 40 publishes exactly 22 × 14 × 9 in and clears all 11 US carriers. The Farpoint 40 is 0.17 lb lighter and clears 4. The Daylite Duffel 45 is the cheapest bag per covered year on this site. The Daylite Plus 20 is a daypack, not a carry-on.

One guarantee across the line
Every Osprey in our ledger carries the All Mighty Guarantee, which Osprey publishes as covering any reason, any product, any era, with repair offered and airline handling damage included. That is the broadest warranty language any maker we track publishes.
Because it is identical across the range, it cancels out of the decision entirely. What is left is size, weight, price and whether the published box clears a sizer — and on those the four bags are genuinely different products.
The line, as published
| Pack | Published size | Weight | Price | US carriers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fairview 40 | 22 × 14 × 9 in | 3.44 lb | $200 | 11 of 11 |

Farpoint or Fairview: a tenth of an inch
These two are the same pack in two harness lengths, and the published boxes are not identical. The Fairview publishes 22 × 14 × 9 in — the standard box, to the inch. The Farpoint publishes 9.1 in of depth, a tenth over, which moves it from clearing every published US limit to clearing four.
In practice a soft pack compresses and no gate agent measures to a tenth of an inch. But our fit column is arithmetic against published policy rather than a guess about enforcement, and the Fairview is the version that does not need the guess. It costs $15 more and weighs 0.17 lb more.
Harness length is the other axis: Osprey publishes the Fairview as the shorter-torso fit. The two compared directly covers that, and how to measure your torso decides it faster than any spec sheet.
The cheapest Osprey is also the best-scoring bag on this site
The Daylite Duffel 45 publishes 45 L at 1.4 lb for $95, inside the standard box on all three sides, and converts to a backpack. That is $4.75 per covered year and 0.03 lb per liter — the best figures in our entire ledger on both axes, which is why it scores 9.8.
What you give up is structure. It is a sack with straps: no frame, no hipbelt worth the name, and whatever shape you pack into it is the shape a sizer sees. Whether that trade works for you is its own page.
The Daylite Plus is not a carry-on
Worth saying plainly because it is Osprey’s most-sold bag. At a published 19 × 11 × 9.5 in and 20 L it is a daypack — and note it does not fit the strictest personal-item boxes either: Frontier and Allegiant publish 18 × 14 × 8 in, and 19 in of height is over that.
It is a second bag for day trips and a laptop, not the bag you fly with. Bags actually built to a personal-item box is the shelf for that job.
Decide in one line
- You want one bag that always passes → Fairview 40.
- You have a longer torso and want the $15 back → Farpoint 40.
- You want maximum volume for minimum money and weight → Daylite Duffel 45.
- You want a second bag for the seat in front of you → Daylite Plus 20, checked against your carrier’s published personal-item box first.
- You want wheels → look outside this line until Osprey publishes the Sojourn’s figures. What two carry systems cost.
Every pick, with the working
Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.
1 · Shorter torsos, and anyone the Farpoint's shoulder straps do not suit
Osprey Fairview 40 Travel Pack
The Farpoint's harness geometry rebuilt for a shorter torso and narrower shoulders, at exactly the published 22 × 14 × 9 in box.

Warranty All Mighty Guarantee — limited lifetime
Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- Published dimensions match the standard carry-on box exactly
- Adjustable torso length rather than a fixed harness
- Same All Mighty Guarantee as the Farpoint
What you give up
- $200 against the Farpoint's $185 for 0.17 lb more weight
- At exactly 22 × 14 × 9 in there is no margin for a stuffed pack
- Laptop sleeve takes 16 in, so a larger machine travels elsewhere
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 6.8/10 — $200 ÷ 20 yr = $10/yr; $200 ÷ 40 L = $5/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
- Carry efficiency 8.6/10 — 3.44 lb ÷ 40 L = 0.086 lb/L
- Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)
Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.

2 · One-bag travel on any carrier that measures
Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Pack
40 L that fits the standard 22 × 14 × 9 in box on height and depth, weighs 3.27 lb, and carries a warranty with no stated end date. It is the strongest single row in this ledger.

- 21.7 × 13.8 × 9.1 in

Warranty All Mighty Guarantee — any reason, any product, any era
Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 0.08 lb per liter is the best carry efficiency figure on this site
- The All Mighty Guarantee names no failure cause and no time limit
- 21.7 in height clears the 22 in standard with room to spare
What you give up
- 13.8 in width clears 14 in only when the pack is not overstuffed — soft bags grow
- No wheels, so a long terminal is carried on your back
- $9.25 per covered year is good but not the cheapest here
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 7.2/10 — $185 ÷ 20 yr = $9.25/yr; $185 ÷ 40 L = $4.63/L
- Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
- Carry efficiency 8.7/10 — 3.27 lb ÷ 40 L = 0.082 lb/L
- Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)

3 · Maximum published volume that still clears a 22 × 14 × 9 in sizer
Osprey Daylite Duffel 45
45 L inside the standard carry-on box for $95 and a warranty with no stated end date — the cheapest cost per covered year of any bag in this ledger.
- Published size
- 21 × 14 × 9 in
- Weight
- 1.4 lb
- Capacity
- 45 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.03 lb/L
- Cost per covered year
- $4.75/yr
- Published list price
- $95
Warranty All Mighty Guarantee — any reason, any product, any era
Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- $4.75 per covered year, the lowest of any bag here
- 45 L published inside a 21 × 14 × 9 in box — more capacity than any carry-on case here
- 1.4 lb, and it converts to a backpack
What you give up
- 14 in width is exactly at the limit, with no margin for a full bag
- No internal structure, so what you pack decides the shape a sizer sees
- Duffel carry gets old fast at 45 L of contents
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 9.5/10 — $95 ÷ 20 yr = $4.75/yr; $95 ÷ 45 L = $2.11/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
- Carry efficiency 10.0/10 — 1.4 lb ÷ 45 L = 0.031 lb/L

4 · A personal item that is also the daypack for the whole trip
Osprey Daylite Plus 20L Backpack
The only personal-item bag here with a published weight, a published price and a warranty that names no end date — $4 per covered year is the cheapest figure on this site.
- Published size
- 19 × 11 × 9.5 in
- Weight
- 1.31 lb
- Capacity
- 20 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.07 lb/L
- Cost per covered year
- $4/yr
- Published list price
- $80
Warranty All Mighty Guarantee — any reason, any product, any era
Fits No US carrier in our table publishes a limit these dimensions satisfy. See the limits.
What it does well
- $4.00 per covered year is the lowest cost-per-year figure in this ledger
- 1.31 lb for 20 L, and it is the bag you then use every day at the destination
- 19 × 11 × 9.5 in fits the published personal-item box at American, Southwest, Frontier and Allegiant
What you give up
- Over United's published 17 × 10 × 9 in limit on all three dimensions
- 20 L is genuinely small — this is a day bag, not a week's clothes
- No lockable zippers
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 8.3/10 — $80 ÷ 20 yr = $4/yr; $80 ÷ 20 L = $4/L
- Airline-fit breadth 0.0/10 — Fits the published personal-item limit at 0 of 8 US carriers
- Carry efficiency 9.4/10 — 1.31 lb ÷ 20 L = 0.066 lb/L
- Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)

5 · Cobbled streets and long terminals on the same trip
Osprey Sojourn Wheeled Travel Pack 45L (22 in)
Skip this one. Not because it is a bad bag - because it is the one Osprey in this line whose published figures we could not read. No exterior dimensions, no weight, no price. On a decision that turns entirely on shape, a bag with no published shape cannot be recommended over four siblings that have one.
The only bag in this ledger that is genuinely both — wheels and a stowaway harness — and the only one whose published weight we could not read, which on a bag carrying two carry systems is the figure that matters most.

What it does well
- A stowaway harness and a wheeled chassis in one bag, so the carry mode is a choice
- 45 L published and sized by Osprey to international carry-on requirements
- All Mighty Guarantee, with a repair route and cover for airline handling damage
What you give up
- No published weight readable — on a bag carrying both a chassis and a harness that is the key omission
- No published price readable, so cost per covered year cannot be computed
- Carrying both systems means carrying the weight of both, whichever one you use
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
- Airline-fit breadth not scored — No published dimensions to check against carrier limits.
- Carry efficiency not scored — No published weight, so weight per liter cannot be computed.
- Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)

Specs: Osprey published product information, compiled 3 September 2026. Osprey publishes this as a 22 in wheeled pack sized to international carry-on requirements. Its own product page could not be read directly on 9 September 2026, so no dimension figures are carried here. Osprey's own product page was not readable on 9 September 2026, so no published price is carried and the Value axis is not scored.
