The fit result is the real argument
Osprey publishes 21 × 14 × 9 in. The standard carry-on box at eight of the eleven US carriers we track is 22 × 14 × 9 in. The duffel is inside it on every side, with an inch of height to spare.

What you are actually giving up
- Structure. There is no frame and no shell. Anything rigid you put in it — a laptop without a sleeve, a camera body, a bottle — is protected by whatever you pack around it.
- A real harness. It converts to a backpack, which is genuinely useful across a terminal, but the straps are a convenience rather than a load system. Compare a published 3.44 lb travel pack with a hipbelt if you are carrying 25 lb for an hour.
- Organization. A duffel is one compartment. That is why cubes exist, and a duffel is the bag where they actually earn their keep — the honest cube case.
- A published fabric spec. Osprey publishes “recycled polyester” and no denier figure. Eagle Creek publishes 600D with 1680D ballistic panels for $54 more.

Osprey publishes the All Mighty Guarantee as covering any reason, any product, any era, with repair offered and airline handling damage included. Most makers publish “defects in materials and workmanship”, which excludes the damage you actually cause.

The verdict
Buy it if
You want maximum volume that still passes a sizer, you pack clothes rather than equipment, and you would rather spend $95 than $200 on the bag itself. For flights, hotels and ordinary travel wear it is the best value on this site by a distance.
Do not buy it if
You need the bag to stand up, protect something rigid, or carry comfortably for more than a few minutes at a time. A wheeled case or a framed travel pack is a different tool, and the duffel-against-suitcase comparison puts numbers on that trade.

Skip this one. On the carry-on question specifically. Its published 10.6 in depth is 1.6 in over the 9 in standard and it clears 1 of 11 US carriers. It is the tougher fabric of the three and the only warranty here that lists a refund - buy it as a checked or road bag, not as the one you take to a sizer.
