The Best Carry-On Luggage for Hawaiian Airlines

Two limits, and the second one does the work

Hawaiian’s published carry-on box is the ordinary one: 22 × 14 × 9 in, or 45.4 L of geometry, the same figure American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue and Breeze publish. Nothing unusual there.

The unusual figure is the weight. Hawaiian publishes a 25 lb cabin bag limit. Most US carriers publish none at all, and the ones that do publish 35 lb. That ten-pound difference changes which bag is the right buy, because a cabin weight cap counts the suitcase as well as the contents.

Read the bottom row again. The heaviest wheeled case we track publishes 9.3 lb, which is 37 percent of Hawaiian’s allowance spent on the container. That is the whole argument of this page.

If you already own a hardside case

Do not buy a second bag on the strength of one trip. A published 7 lb case still leaves 18 lb against Hawaiian’s cap, which is a workable four or five days for most people — and the height limit is the part more likely to catch you out than the scale.

Two checks before you fly: measure the case with the tape against its published figure, wheels and handle included, and weigh it packed. Both take two minutes at home and neither is possible at a gate. Measuring a bag the way a sizer does covers the first; a ten-dollar scale covers the second.

What counts toward the cap

The bag and everything in it. Hawaiian publishes the limit for the carry-on item, which means the laptop inside it counts and the jacket you are wearing does not. That is the whole reason the oldest trick in one-bag travel still works: heavy boots and the bulkiest layer go on your body at the gate.

One more thing about inter-island flights

Hawaiian’s published cabin figures are the same whether you are flying from the mainland or between islands, but the aircraft are not. Smaller cabins mean smaller bins, and a bag that is legal on paper can still be gate-checked for lack of space.
