The Best Luggage for College Students

The three constraints nobody lists

Most student luggage advice is a list of cute suitcases. The actual constraints are duller and more decisive:

• It gets used in bursts. Four or five round trips a year around breaks, usually on the cheapest fare available, frequently with a carry-on fee attached.
• It has to live somewhere. A dorm closet is shared and small. A hardside case cannot be collapsed; a duffel folds to the size of a sweater.
• There is no replacement budget. Which makes the published warranty term the single most valuable line on the spec sheet — and the one almost no student bag guide reads.

What four years actually costs

Two things fall out of that table. The cheapest bag to buy is not the cheapest bag to own — the American Tourister wins over four years and loses over twenty, because its warranty term ends at ten. And the duffel wins on both counts.

The closet test

A carry-on case is a rigid box roughly 22 × 15 × 10 in that exists whether or not you are traveling. In a dorm room it competes with everything else you own for eight months a year.
