An inch and a half of depth decides it

These bags hold the same 40 L and they hold it in different shapes. Eagle Creek publishes a long, shallow bag: 22 in long, 12.5 in wide, 9 in deep. Patagonia publishes a short, fat one: 21 in long, 13.7 in wide, 10.6 in deep.

Against the 22 × 14 × 9 in box seven US carriers publish, the Cargo Hauler clears on all three sides — and it is the only bag in this ledger with a genuine 1.5 in of width margin, which matters because soft bags grow when you stuff them. The Black Hole’s 10.6 in depth clears only Sun Country’s 11 in box. Everything measured against the strict box.

If the bag is always checked, none of that matters. If it might go overhead, it is the whole decision. When to check and when not to.

Two different ideas about weather

Patagonia publishes a TPU-film laminate over recycled polyester ripstop — a bonded film, which is the construction that keeps a bag’s contents dry on a roof rack or a wet dock. Eagle Creek publishes a TPU coating on 600D polyester, with 1680D ballistic panels on the base.

Those are different priorities, both legitimately expressed in the spec sheet. A laminate is about water. Ballistic base panels are about abrasion — the bottom of a bag dragged across a gravel parking lot or a baggage belt. What weather resistance actually means on a duffel.

Neither maker publishes a waterproof rating, and we will not infer one. Both describe water resistance in prose rather than in a number, which is the honest state of this category.

Both lifetime, one broader

Eagle Creek publishes a limited lifetime warranty with a repair route. Patagonia publishes the Ironclad Guarantee as repair, replace or refund — the only warranty in this ledger that names a refund as an outcome.

Against the site’s 20-year horizon that is $7.45 a year for the Eagle Creek and $7.95 for the Patagonia. Fifty cents a year is not a decision; the fit verdict above is. Every open-ended warranty in the ledger, priced.

Both are carried, and one packs into itself

Neither of these has a back panel, a frame or a hip belt. Both publish shoulder straps, and 40 L of contents on one shoulder is 40 L of contents on one shoulder regardless of who made the bag.

The Eagle Creek publishes one feature the Patagonia does not: it packs into its own end pocket. That makes it a viable second bag — folded into a checked case on the way out, and the bag you carry home when you have bought things. The full duffel ranking.

The verdict

• Buy the Cargo Hauler 40 as a carry-on duffel, a packable second bag, or anything that has to satisfy a gate sizer. It is lighter, cheaper and the only one of the two that fits. Its con: no laminate, and ballistic fabric only on the base.
• Buy the Black Hole 40 as a checked duffel, a gear bag or anything that lives outdoors. The laminate and the refund clause are both real. Its con: 10.6 in of depth rules out the cabin almost everywhere.
