The Best Checked Luggage for International Travel

The constraint flips, and almost nobody says so

Every guide to checked luggage repeats the 62 linear inch rule, and for US domestic travel that is the right rule. It is height plus width plus depth added together, and almost every US carrier publishes it. The rule in full.

Now read what an international carrier publishes. British Airways publishes a checked bag limit of 90 × 75 × 43 cm — which converts to 35 × 30 × 17 in, or 82 linear inches. That is twenty inches more generous than the US rule. And alongside it, a weight cap of 23 kg per bag.

The weight numbers look identical — 23 kg is 50.7 lb — so why does the constraint move? Because size has stopped being scarce. Given a box you cannot realistically fill without going overweight, the only limit left is the scale. On a US route you pack until the bag is full and hope it is under 50 lb. On an international one you hit 23 kg with the bag half empty.

The empty case is a fifth of your allowance

Which makes empty weight the specification that matters, and it is the one nobody checks at the shop.

Between the lightest and the heaviest of those is 9.56 lb — 4.34 kg, or nearly nineteen percent of an entire international allowance, decided at purchase and unchangeable afterwards. There is no packing technique that recovers it.

What to buy

The honest answer for international checked travel is not the biggest hard case. It is the lightest thing that will survive the belt.

So unless every segment is on a carrier publishing the larger box, buy for 62 linear inches and treat the international generosity as headroom you do not use.

What being over actually costs

Weight is the cap that is always measured — a bag cannot be tagged without going on a scale, which is why it is enforced far more consistently than size. The arithmetic that follows is uncomfortable: a case that is 3 kg heavier than the alternative costs you 3 kg of packing on every single flight you take with it, for as long as you own it. Against a warranty measured in decades, that is the real price of the bag.
