The Best Duffel for Checked Baggage
The case for a checked duffel is arithmetic: it spends four percent of your allowance on itself where a hard case spends twenty-two.
We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.
Against a 50 lb checked allowance, a 1.81 lb duffel leaves you 48.2 lb of payload and a 10.96 lb hard case leaves 39. That nine-pound gap is the entire argument — and it only holds when the contents do not need protecting.

The payload arithmetic
| Bag | Published weight | Share of 50 lb | Payload left |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L | 1.81 lb | 4% | 48.2 lb |
| Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 | 1.4 lb | 3% | 48.6 lb |
| Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L | 2.06 lb | 4% | 47.9 lb |
| Travelpro Maxlite 5 29 in | 8 lb | 16% | 42 lb |
| Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX 28 in | 10.96 lb | 22% | 39 lb |
Nine pounds is roughly a week of clothing. On a checked bag — where the weight cap is the constraint that is always measured — that is the largest single saving available anywhere in this section. Why weight is always enforced and size is not.
And they clear the linear cap
A second advantage that gets no attention. Almost every large wheeled case exceeds the 62 linear inch checked cap once wheels and handle housing are counted.
| Bag | Published overall | Linear inches | Against 62 in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L | 22 × 12.5 × 9 in | 43.5 in | 18.5 in of margin |
| Travelpro Maxlite 5 29 in | 31 × 21 × 13 in | 65 in | 3 in over |
| Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX 28 in | 30.5 × 20.5 × 13.25 in | 64.25 in | 2.25 in over |
Enforcement of the linear cap is inconsistent — checked bags are weighed every time and measured rarely — but oversize fees are charged per bag and per leg, and a duffel removes the question entirely. How linear inches work.
What you give up
- Protection. Fabric transmits impact; a polycarbonate shell absorbs it. This is the whole counter-argument and it is decisive for fragile contents.
- Wheels. A checked duffel loaded to 48 lb is genuinely heavy to carry, and you carry it from the car to the desk and from the carousel to the taxi.
- Structure. A duffel packed to a third sags with everything at the bottom. For a checked bag that also means it flexes when dropped. Which is why you pack it full.
- A lock that means anything. Soft fabric can be opened without the zip, which matters more on a bag you are not standing next to.
The wheels point is the one people underestimate. Nearly fifty pounds on a shoulder strap across an airport car park is not a small thing, and it is the strongest practical argument for a wheeled case regardless of the arithmetic.
Which duffel
| Bag | Capacity | Warranty | Per covered year | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L | 40 L | Limited lifetime | $7.45 | The all-round answer — 1680D ballistic base panels |
| Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 | 45 L | Lifetime, covers airline damage | $4.75 | Best value, and the only one covering airline damage |
| Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L | 40 L | Ironclad — repair, replace or refund | $7.95 | The only warranty here listing a refund |
The Osprey row is the notable one: $4.75 per covered year is the second-cheapest figure on the site, and its All Mighty Guarantee explicitly covers damage caused by an airline — which almost nothing else in our ledger does, and which is precisely the damage a checked bag suffers. Why that clause is rare and valuable.
The verdict
- Checking clothes → a duffel, every time. Nine pounds of extra payload, no linear-inch question, nothing on it to break.
- Best value → Osprey Daylite Duffel 45, at 1.4 lb and $4.75 per covered year, with published airline-damage cover.
- Best built → Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler, with published 1680D ballistic panels on the base, which is where a checked bag abrades.
- Anything fragile → a hard case, and accept the 10.96 lb. Fabric does not protect.
- A long walk at either end → wheels, and accept the payload loss.
Every pick, with the working
Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

What it does well
- $4.75 per covered year, the lowest of any bag here
- 45 L published inside a 21 × 14 × 9 in box — more capacity than any carry-on case here
- 1.4 lb, and it converts to a backpack
What you give up
- 14 in width is exactly at the limit, with no margin for a full bag
- No internal structure, so what you pack decides the shape a sizer sees
- Duffel carry gets old fast at 45 L of contents
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 9.5/10 — $95 ÷ 20 yr = $4.75/yr; $95 ÷ 45 L = $2.11/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
- Carry efficiency 10.0/10 — 1.4 lb ÷ 45 L = 0.031 lb/L
- Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 22 × 12.5 × 9 in clears the standard carry-on box on all three dimensions as published
- 1 lb 13 oz for 40 L, and it packs into its own end pocket
- $7.45 per covered year under a limited lifetime warranty
What you give up
- No wheels and no back panel structure — the straps are a shoulder strap, not a harness
- Ballistic panels are on the base only; the body is 600D
- A soft-sided 40 L bag only holds its published shape when it is not overpacked
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 8.0/10 — $149 ÷ 20 yr = $7.45/yr; $149 ÷ 40 L = $3.73/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY

3 · A carry-on that becomes a backpack when the terminal is long

- 40 L
- Weight per liter

- Published list price
- $159
Warranty Ironclad Guarantee — repair, replace or refund
Fits 1 of 11 US carriers: SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 0.05 lb per liter is the best carry efficiency figure on the whole site
- Ironclad Guarantee lists refund alongside repair and replacement
- Removable padded backpack straps as published, not an accessory
What you give up
- 10.6 in depth fails the 9 in standard at six US carriers
- $7.95 per covered year is good, but $159 is real money for a duffel
- A soft duffel packed full loses whatever shape let it pass a sizer
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 7.8/10 — $159 ÷ 20 yr = $7.95/yr; $159 ÷ 40 L = $3.98/L
- Airline-fit breadth 0.9/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 1 of 11 US carriers: SY
- Carry efficiency 9.9/10 — 2.06 lb ÷ 40 L = 0.052 lb/L
- Warranty & support 8.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)

4 · Checked travel where weight allowance is tighter than size allowance
Travelpro Maxlite 5 Large Check-In Expandable Spinner (29 in)
8 lb for a 29 in case is genuinely light, but the published overall size is 65 linear inches — three over the 62 in cap almost every US carrier applies to checked bags.

Warranty Built For A Lifetime limited warranty with the Trusted Companion Promise, which Travelpro publishes as covering airline-caused damage for the first year
Fits No US carrier in our table publishes a limit these dimensions satisfy. See the limits.
What it does well
- 8 lb published for a 29 in case leaves 42 lb of payload inside a 50 lb checked cap
- The published warranty covers airline-caused damage for the first year, which almost nothing else does
- Expands 2 in, which is the return leg solved
What you give up
- 65 published linear inches is over the 62 in cap most US carriers apply to checked bags
- Softside means the shell protects contents less than a hard case would
- No manufacturer-published price to compute cost per covered year
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
- Airline-fit breadth 0.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 0 of 11 US carriers
- Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.
- Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)

5 · Checked bags carrying anything that would not survive being stacked
Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX Large Spinner (28 in)
Skip this one. Skip it for checked clothing, and buy it for checked fragility. At 10.96 lb it spends 22% of a 50 lb allowance on the container - which is the right trade only when what is inside genuinely cannot be crushed. For a bag of clothes it is nine pounds of packing you gave away.
Polycarbonate protection for checked handling, at a published 10.96 lb — nearly 11 lb of your 50 lb allowance spent before you pack anything.

Fits No US carrier in our table publishes a limit these dimensions satisfy. See the limits.
What it does well
- 100% polycarbonate flexes under the impacts a checked bag actually receives
- $25.99 per covered year on a published 10 year warranty
- 64.25 published linear inches is closer to the 62 in cap than most 28 in cases
What you give up
- 10.96 lb empty is 22% of a 50 lb checked allowance
- Still over the 62 linear inch cap most US carriers publish
- The published warranty covers defects, not airline handling damage
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 3.9/10 — $259.99 ÷ 10 yr = $26.00/yr
- Airline-fit breadth 0.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 0 of 11 US carriers
- Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.
- Warranty & support 4.0/10 — 10 yr (4 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)
