What the lines actually publish

We checked three major lines. They do not agree with each other, and none of them uses the rule you already know from flying.

Two things follow from that table. First, the only line publishing a size rule measures a completely different shape from an airline. Second, on the two lines that publish anything numeric, the figure that binds is 50 lb per bag — and that includes the bag.

The rule is the opposite shape to an airline’s

An airline adds your three dimensions together and caps the total at 62 in, so a long case is penalized as hard as a deep one. How linear inches work covers that arithmetic.

Carnival’s published rule caps two dimensions and states that “the length of the bag is not a factor”. Lay the bag flat: it must be no more than 16 in tall and no more than 24 in wide. How long it is does not matter.

That inverts the design you should look for. Long and shallow is rewarded on a ship and punished on a plane. A 40 in garment bag totals 65 linear inches and is over the airline limit, while lying flat it is 3 in tall and sails through the cruise rule.

The bags, against both rules

Every bag here clears the cruise rule. Only two clear both rules and publish a weight low enough to matter. That is the whole shortlist.

Why empty weight is the axis here

On a 50 lb cap that includes the bag, the case you buy spends part of your allowance before you pack anything. The spread in our ledger is not small: a published 4.25 lb wheeled duffel against a published 11.02 lb hardside is 6.77 lb of clothes, decided in the shop.

Cruises are also the trip where that matters most, because they are the trip people pack formal wear for. Two jackets, shoes and a garment bag is real weight, and 6.77 lb is roughly a pair of dress shoes plus a suit. The Eagle Creek publishes 108 L of capacity at 4.25 lb — more volume than any hardside we track, for less than half the empty weight.

The picks

• The main bag → Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler Wheeled 110. A published 4.25 lb for 108 L, clearing both the cruise footprint and the 62 in airline cap at 59 linear inches, under a warranty Eagle Creek publishes as lifetime against defects. It also collapses when empty, which matters in a cabin.
• The bag you carry on board yourself → Osprey Daylite Duffel 45. A published 1.4 lb and 45 L inside the standard 22 × 14 × 9 in box. Checked bags are delivered to the stateroom hours after you board, so this is the one holding your swimsuit and medication. The case for it.
• Formal nights → WallyBags 40 in Deluxe, published at 1.5 lb with a built-in hanger channel. It clears the cruise rule easily because length is not counted, and it is over the airline cap at 65 linear inches — so it works as a carried garment bag, not a checked one. Packing a suit without one is the alternative.

The constraint nobody publishes

Cruise cabins are small and the standard advice is to slide your empty cases under the bed. That is the reason Carnival’s height figure is the tight one.

We will not put a number on bed clearance, because none of the three lines we checked publishes one. What we can say is which bags stop being a problem: a soft duffel folds to nearly nothing when empty, and a hard shell keeps its full 13.5 in of depth for the entire cruise whether or not anything is in it. That is a second, quieter argument for the fabric bag.

Two checks before you book

• Read your own line’s page, not this one. Of three major lines, one publishes a size rule, one publishes only pieces and weight, and one publishes the phrase “a reasonable amount”. They are not interchangeable, and a chartered or river sailing can be stricter than any of them.
• Measure against the airline first. If you are flying to the port, the plane is almost certainly the tighter of the two tests, and it is the one that charges you at a desk. How we would choose a checked bag generally.
