Eight of the eleven US carriers we track publish 22 × 14 × 9 in as the carry-on box. The Osprey publishes 9 in of depth — exactly on it. The Patagonia publishes 10.6 in, which is 1.6 in over.

Depth is the dimension a sizer frame is least forgiving about, because it is the one that stops a bag entering the frame at all. Height and width can be talked down; a bag that will not go into the slot does not go into the slot.

The result is that these two bags are not really competing for the same job. One is a carry-on that happens to be waterproof-ish; the other is a weatherproof bag that happens to be carry-on sized on two dimensions out of three. The published box at every carrier.

What the extra $64 buys

A published specification. Patagonia publishes a recycled polyester ripstop with a TPU-film laminate — a specific, checkable construction claim. Osprey publishes “recycled polyester” for the Daylite Duffel and no denier figure at all.

If the bag lives on roof racks, boat decks and trailheads, that laminate is the difference between damp contents and dry ones, and it is worth paying for. If the bag lives in overhead bins and hotel rooms, nothing in that life tests it. What waterproof actually means on a duffel.

• Capacity goes the other way. The cheaper bag publishes 45 L against 40 L. You are paying $64 more for five liters less.

Buy the Black Hole 40 if

The bag gets wet. Buy it as a checked bag, a road bag or a gear bag, with the published depth understood up front rather than discovered at a gate. The refund clause is a real and unusual thing to own.
