Why these two and nothing else

Every other travel pack in our ledger is over the standard box on at least one dimension. The Farpoint publishes 9.1 in of depth, the Cotopaxi Allpa 10 in, the Peak Design 9.5 in. Depth is where soft packs fail, and almost all of them do.

These two do not. Osprey publishes 22 × 14 × 9 in for the Fairview — the standard box to the inch. Tortuga publishes 22 × 14 × 8 in. Both clear the published limit at all 11 US carriers we track. The full list of bags that clear the box is short, and these are the only packs on it.

What an inch of depth margin is worth

The Fairview publishes 9 in against a 9 in limit. That is a pass with nothing to spare. The Tortuga publishes 8 in — an inch in hand.

On a soft pack that margin is not academic, because the contents decide the shape. A pack stuffed past its published volume grows in the dimension with least structure, and if it started at exactly the limit it is now over it. The Tortuga is the only 40 L pack we track that can absorb a bad packing job and still go into the frame.

Only one of them promises anything

Osprey publishes the All Mighty Guarantee: any reason, any product, any era, repair offered, airline handling damage included. It is the broadest language any maker in our ledger publishes, and on a $200 bag it works out to $10.00 per covered year.

Tortuga publishes a Worldwide Warranty with no stated term. We do not substitute a number for a missing one, so this pack has no cost-per-covered-year figure at all — the more expensive bag is the one you cannot evaluate on value.

That is the central asymmetry here. You are paying $150 more and 0.96 lb more for one extra inch of depth margin, and giving up the best published guarantee on the site to do it. Every open-ended warranty, costed.

You want a pack that clears every published limit, costs $150 less, weighs nearly a pound less, and is backed by the broadest guarantee we track. For most travelers this is simply the better buy. Examined on its own terms.

Buy the Tortuga Pro 40 if

You have been caught by a sizer before, you overpack on the way home, and an inch of depth margin is worth $150 and a pound to you. Buy it understanding that no warranty term is published.

Consider neither if
