Packing for a Family Trip

Count the allowance you already have

Every ticketed passenger carries their own baggage entitlement, children included. Most families never do this arithmetic and check bags they did not need to.

The lap infant row is the one that catches people, and it is cruel arithmetic: the trip where you carry the most gear is the trip where you gain no allowance for the person generating it. Plan that one around the adults’ entitlement and expect to check something.

Two caveats before you rely on this. Several carriers charge for the overhead bag on their cheapest fare, which changes the count — the five that do are listed. And a personal item box is much smaller and varies far more than a carry-on box does. Checked per carrier.

The constraint is retrieval, not volume

One person packing for a week is an optimization problem: fit the most useful clothing into the smallest space. Four people packing for a week is an organization problem, and it has a completely different solution.

The moment that defines a family trip is eleven at night in a hotel room, everyone tired, and you need one specific child’s one specific thing. If everyone’s clothes are mixed in a single large case, that is a five-minute excavation performed quietly in the dark. If each person’s clothes are in their own colored cube, it is ten seconds.

The one page where a six-piece set wins

Everywhere else on this site we argue for fewer, larger cubes, because every cube has walls and walls hold no clothing. For a family, that logic inverts.

• One cube per person, one color per person. That is the whole system. A six-piece set covers a family of four with two spare for shared items.
• The walls now buy something real. They buy an index. For one person that index is worthless; for four people it is the point.
• Everything for one person stays together whichever bag it ends up in, which means bags can be repacked between people without unpacking anyone.

Distribute, do not consolidate

The instinct is one big case for the family and a small bag each. It is the wrong way round, for three reasons.

1. One big case is one point of failure. If it is delayed, the whole family has nothing. What that day looks like.
2. Split each person’s clothes across two bags. Half of everyone’s wardrobe in each of two cases means a lost bag is an inconvenience rather than a shopping trip.
3. Weight caps are per bag, not per family. Four bags at 30 lb is entirely legal where one at 60 lb is an overweight fee at almost every carrier. What those fees cost.

What must stay in the cabin

Non-negotiable, and worth writing on a list because this is the part that gets forgotten while managing children:

• All medication, for everybody, in a bag that stays with you.
• One change of clothes per child. Children generate laundry emergencies at altitude with impressive reliability.
• Every battery and power bank — prohibited in the hold, including a gate-checked bag. The rule in full.
• Snacks. Solid food clears security without difficulty and the cart comes round twice. What food you can actually bring.
• Anything that stops a meltdown. You know what it is. It is not in the hold.

The system, end to end

1. Count the entitlement — number of ticketed passengers, times what your carrier publishes per passenger.
2. One cube per person, one color each, packed by that person where they are old enough.
3. Split each person’s cubes across two bags so no single bag holds anyone’s whole wardrobe.
4. Shared items — toiletries, chargers, first aid — in their own cubes, in the adult bags.
5. Cabin bag per person: medication, one change of clothes, batteries, snacks, entertainment.
6. Weigh every bag at home. Per-bag caps are much easier to satisfy than you think once the load is distributed.
